ROME

Rome is continually listed as one of the top travel destinations in the world and it’s easy to see why. This stunning city is layered with culture, captivating history, delicious local cuisine, piazza’s, public fountains and stunning landmarks. I would have to say Rome in the summer is my favourite place in the world.

GETTING HERE

You can arrive via the airport then train to Roma Termini (central station), or over land by train. The train system is quite good in most of Europe and the price for tickets is fairly reasonable. High-speed trains operate between major cities and tickets can either be purchased online via any euro-rail linked site, or at the station itself.

WHAT TO SEE

There are so many options of experiences to be had and sites to see. I would recommend walking to most landmarks, as this is the best way to experience all the stunning hidden side streets and history along the way. A good idea is to purchase a tourist city map with landmarks listed or download a travel app to guide you along your way, these apps often have built in guided tours that you can listen to whilst at each site.

The pantheon is a must, located in the centre of the historic part of Rome, commissioned by Roman emperor Marcus Agrippa, this old roman structure once a Roman temple is one of the best preserved structures of ancient Rome. With its freestanding dome and oculus opening to the sky, this building is a marvel of ancient and modern architecture. Entry is free and surrounding are many cafes, delis and gelataria.

Close by is the breathtaking Fantana Di Trevi or Trevi fountain, designed by Architect Nicola Slavi, this sculptural and dynamic marble fountain marks the perfect photo opportunity. Its recommended to visit this place during the night-time too as it is illuminated, highlighting the glowing blue water and shadowy figures. Piazza Navona is a popular destination, this large public space hosting markets and Baroque fountains is the perfect place to relax, have a coffee or lunch and take some photographs.

The Colosseum is arguably the most famous landmark of this ancient city. Now newly resorted, the colosseum hosts an upper level gallery area where you can view historical images, and models of the original structure. You can purchase tickets for the colosseum at the ticket both on site or pre-book guided tours. During summer months the cues can be extensive. A guided tour is recommend since there is so much history to be understood at this iconic site. Close to this area is the Roman Forum, ruins of a large Roman public space once surrounded by important government buildings.

The mouth of truth or Bocca Della Varita is a stone mask like figure depicting the face of the sea god Oceanus made popular by the movie Roman Holiday is worth a peak and a photo. The Spanish steps are very much a part of the cities, I would recommend sitting of an evening and doing some people watching or enjoying a Gelato on the steps at night.

Within the city lies Vatican City an independent city-state. Within this area lies some of the most famous cultural landmarks in the world, St Peters Basilica, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. Each of these sites are well worth visiting, as always during the summer months the queues can be excessive. Some tour operators offer a jump the queue opportunity for an additional fee. In order to reach the Sistine Chapel you need to enter the Vatican Museums, through which you are eventually guided by signage to the site. You will need a few hours to see the Museums, as the art collection is extensive, inside you will find incredible pieces of painting, sculpture tapestry and decorative art in 54 separate galleries. In order to gain access to these areas you must dress modestly, generally shoulders should be covered and short skirts and denim shorts can be frowned upon.

EAT

There is a plethora of dining opportunities in Rome, local pasta, pizza and gelato can be found in almost every laneway and street. You can also visit one of the many delis and purchase items to take-away. Local supermarkets, although small generally stock local items at cheaper prices, pizza, cured meats, cheeses, olives, Limon cello and wines. You may want to dine near local landmarks, be prepared to pay tourist prices but it is worth it at times for the stunning views and atmosphere. Some restaurants offer lunch and dinner deals at certain time of the day.
