What To See Visiting Marrakech

Explore the Medina and Souks

The medina is the heart of Marrakech and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Get lost in its maze-like alleys, where vibrant souks (markets) sell everything from colorful spices and handmade ceramics to luxurious leather goods and intricate lanterns.  Must-see Souks:

  • Souk Semmarine: Known for textiles and leather goods.
  • Souk el-Attarine: Famous for spices and perfumes.
  • Souk des Teinturiers (Dyers’ Souk): A photogenic spot where colorful yarn hangs out to dry.

Visit Jemaa el-Fnaa

At the heart of the medina lies Jemaa el-Fnaa, the bustling main square that comes alive with snake charmers, street performers, henna artists, and food stalls. By day, it’s vibrant and chaotic, but by night, it transforms into a lively open-air food market.  Make sure you go at night, its a whole different experience, I can’t emphasise that enough.

Don’t miss: Enjoying a fresh orange juice from one of the stalls or dining at one of the rooftop cafes overlooking the square.  (Alcohol is some-what prohibited).

Wander Through Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum

We loved this the garden is spectacular plants curated from exotic international destinations.  Jardin Majorelle, a lush oasis filled with exotic plants, cobalt blue buildings, and peaceful fountains. Adjacent to the garden is the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, which showcases the late designer’s fashion creations and pays homage to his connection with Marrakech.  The garden however it definitely the highlight.

See the Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace and Ben Youssef Madrasa

A stunning example of Moroccan architecture, featuring intricate tilework, carved wooden ceilings, and tranquil courtyards. El Badi Palace:Once a grand palace, it now stands in majestic ruins. Climb to the top for panoramic views of Marrakech. Ben Youssef Madrasa was our favourite this is the best place for photos.

Experience a Traditional Hammam

We didn’t do this but wished we did. Indulge in a luxurious spa experience at a traditional Moroccan hammam (bathhouse). Choose between a local hammam for an authentic experience or a luxury spa for a more refined version. Popular Hammams:

  • Hammam de la Rose (luxury).
  • Les Bains de Marrakech (luxury)
  • Hammam Dar el-Bacha (traditional)

Savor Moroccan Cuisine

It’s exciting to try different cuisine. Try classic dishes like, tagine, couscous, pastilla, and harira soup. Don’t forget to enjoy a refreshing glass of Moroccan mint tea!  To be honest I found the food a little less flavoursome than expected.

Top Restaurants:

  • Nomad: Modern Moroccan cuisine with rooftop views.
  • La Maison Arabe: A historic riad with a renowned restaurant.
  • Al Fassia: Known for traditional Moroccan dishes and run by women.

Visit the Saadian Tombs

Discovered in 1917, the Saadian Tombs date back to the 16th century and are beautifully preserved. The mausoleum is decorated with intricate zellij tiles, carved cedar wood, and delicate stucco work, making it a must-see for history and architecture lovers.

Take a Day Trip to the Atlas Mountains

If you’re looking for a break from the city, consider a day trip to the nearby Atlas Mountains. You can visit traditional Berber villages, hike scenic trails, or enjoy a camel ride in the foothills. We did this and teamed it with a camel safari and dinner. The tour finished at 2am we feel asleep by the fire in the desert with the our tour. we saw an ATV bike tours too through the desert at dawn which looked fun, safety may be an issue though.

Stay in a Riad

This was one of the absolute highlights make sure you take your time and select one that you love the feel of.  A traditional Moroccan house with a central courtyard. I can’t recommend enough staying in a Riad, we liked Riad Touda see our hotels we love page. Riads offer an intimate, peaceful retreat from the busy streets of Marrakech. Many also serve delicious homemade breakfasts and have rooftop terraces where you can relax after a day of exploring.

Top Riads:

  • Riad Yasmine (famous for its Instagram-worthy pool)
  • Riad Be Marrakech (bohemian decor and vibrant atmosphere)
  • La Sultana Marrakech(luxury option with spa and rooftop dining)
  • Riad Touda – we stayed here.

Shop for Moroccan Treasures

Marrakech is a shopper’s dream, and you’ll find unique souvenirs and artisanal products at every turn. Look for handwoven rugs, brass lanterns, leather poufs, and traditional Moroccan slippers (babouches). Visit the Ensemble Artisanal if you want high-quality goods without the bargaining.

And we loved the camel tours into the desert.

Final Tips for Visiting Marrakech:

  • Probably a good idea to dress modestly.
  • Stay Hydrated: Marrakech can get very hot, especially in summer, so drink plenty of water.
  • Watch for Scams: Be cautious of unofficial guides offering help in the medina always agree on prices upfront.

Embrace the Chaos: Marrakech is a sensory overload, but that’s part of its magic. Relax, go with the flow, and enjoy the experience!

Marrakech is a city of contrasts – ancient and modern, chaotic and serene – and it offers something for everyone. Whether you’re drawn to its rich history, vibrant souks, or delicious cuisine, you’re sure to leave with unforgettable memories.
